Brown Trout

While Slinger itself doesn't have many prominent brown trout streams, a short drive can put you within reach of some decent opportunities. Focus on the rivers and creeks further north and west in Washington and Dodge counties. These streams, often smaller and more intimate than larger rivers, can hold surprisingly good populations of wild and stocked brown trout. Spring and fall are peak seasons, with the cooler water temperatures bringing the browns out to feed. Wading is often necessary, so be sure to wear appropriate gear and exercise caution. A local tactic is to use small dry flies or nymphs to imitate the natural insects that the trout are feeding on. Stealth is key, as these fish can be easily spooked. The brown trout in these streams typically range in size from 8 to 14 inches, with the occasional larger fish. Be sure to check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits before fishing.
