While Stockbridge isn't the first place that comes to mind for brown trout, the nearby waterways connected to Lake Winnebago offer a unique, though often overlooked, opportunity. The Fox River, as it flows into and out of Lake Winnebago, holds a population of brown trout that migrate from the lake into the river system, especially during the spring and fall. These fish are typically targeting spawning areas or following baitfish. Focus your efforts on areas with deeper runs, eddies, and submerged structure. Trolling small crankbaits or spoons in the river channel can be effective, as can casting spinners or drifting live bait. Access to the Fox River is available at several public boat launches and parks along its course. A key tip for success is to pay attention to water clarity; the Fox River can be prone to turbidity, especially after heavy rains. Fishing early morning or late evening can improve your chances. While not a trophy fishery, the brown trout in the Fox River can provide a challenging and rewarding experience, with fish typically ranging from 14-20 inches.
