Brown Trout

While Stoughton isn't necessarily known as a premier trout destination, the nearby Badfish Creek offers surprisingly good brown trout fishing. This is a classic small stream environment, demanding stealth and accurate casts. Spring and fall are the best times, coinciding with cooler water temperatures and trout spawning activity. Browns in Badfish Creek are typically wild, so handle them with care if practicing catch and release. A key tactic is to use natural presentations – small nymphs and dry flies that imitate the local insects. Access can be tricky as much of the land is private, so be sure to respect all postings and seek permission where necessary. A good starting point is the public access point near the Rutland-Dunn Townline Road bridge. These browns aren't huge, but the challenge of fishing a small stream and the beauty of the surroundings make it worthwhile.
