Brown Trout

While Sun Prairie isn't exactly a brown trout mecca, dedicated anglers can find some decent opportunities within a reasonable drive. The closest option would be exploring some of the smaller tributaries that feed into the larger rivers of southern Wisconsin. While not specifically 'named' here to protect the fishery, look west towards the driftless region. Spring and fall are the most productive times, as cooler water temperatures encourage trout activity. Early morning and late evening hours are often best. A local tactic involves focusing on areas with undercut banks, fallen logs, and riffle-pool sequences. These spots provide cover and feeding lanes for brown trout. Access can sometimes be tricky, as many of these streams flow through private land, so always respect posted signs and seek permission when necessary. The brown trout in these smaller streams tend to be on the smaller side, but the reward lies in the challenge of the hunt and the beauty of the surroundings. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain the population. A small selection of dry flies, nymphs, and streamers will cover most situations.
