Brown Trout

While perhaps not the first place that comes to mind for trout fishing in Wisconsin, the Suring area offers some surprisingly good opportunities for Brown Trout, particularly in the Oconto River and its tributaries. These streams, though smaller, provide the cool, clear, and oxygen-rich water that brown trout thrive in. Spring and fall are the best times to target these fish, with the cooler water temperatures triggering increased feeding activity. Focus on areas with undercut banks, overhanging vegetation, and rocky riffles, which provide cover and holding areas for the trout. Wading is a common way to fish these streams, but be mindful of private property and obtain permission where necessary. A local tip: small spinners, spoons, and dry flies can be effective, especially during the early morning and late evening hours. The brown trout in these streams tend to be wild and wary, so stealth and a delicate presentation are key to success.
