Brown Trout

Washburn might not be the first place that comes to mind for brown trout, but several Lake Superior tributaries in the area offer surprisingly good fishing. The Sioux River and Cranberry River are two local favorites, holding decent populations of browns that migrate from the lake. Spring and fall are the peak seasons, coinciding with spawning runs. However, some resident browns can be found throughout the summer in cooler sections of the rivers. Wading is the most common method, but be cautious of slippery rocks and fluctuating water levels, especially after rain. A practical tip: check the Wisconsin DNR's website for stocking reports and regulations specific to each river. The browns here can be challenging to catch, often requiring stealth and careful presentation of flies or small spinners. Don't be surprised to hook into a steelhead as well, as they share the same waters.
