Brown Trout

While Southeastern Wisconsin isn't typically known for its trout fishing, the stretch of the Fox River near Waterford does offer a unique opportunity to target Brown Trout. Stocking efforts by the DNR have created a small, but viable, trout fishery. Spring and fall are the best times to target these browns, as water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. During these periods, try drifting nymphs or small streamers through deeper runs and pools. In the summer, trout will often seek refuge in cooler, shaded areas. Early morning or late evening are prime times. A good access point is the public access area on Highway 83, just north of Waterford. Be aware that the Fox River here is relatively shallow and clear, so stealth is key. Use lighter line and make long casts to avoid spooking the fish. While the brown trout in this area may not be trophy-sized, they offer a fun and challenging fishing experience in an unexpected location.
