Brown Trout

While West Milwaukee isn't immediately known for trout fishing, dedicated anglers can find brown trout in the Menomonee River, particularly in the stretches further upstream and away from the most urbanized areas. Stocking efforts contribute to a limited, but present, population. Spring and fall, particularly after stocking, offer the best chances. Focus on areas with deeper pools and faster-moving water, as these provide better habitat for trout. Small spinners, spoons, and bait such as worms or corn can be effective. Fly fishing with nymphs or small streamers can also yield results. Access can be challenging in some areas, so research access points carefully. The browns in this area are generally smaller, often stocked sizes, but the opportunity to catch trout in an urban environment makes it a unique experience. Check the Wisconsin DNR stocking reports to know where and when recent stockings have occurred. Be mindful of water quality and potential urban runoff when selecting your fishing spots.
