Flathead Catfish

Harlingen, Texas, may not be the first place that comes to mind for flathead catfish, but the resacas and connected waterways hold some surprisingly large specimens. These predatory fish prefer slow-moving water with plenty of cover, and the resacas offer just that. Targeting them requires patience and heavier gear. Live bait, such as sunfish or goldfish, is the most effective method. Focus your efforts around submerged logs, deep holes, and areas with heavy vegetation. Night fishing is particularly productive, as flatheads are primarily nocturnal hunters. Access is generally good from the bank in city parks, but a small boat or kayak can open up more fishing opportunities. Be prepared for a battle; flatheads are powerful fish, and a large one can put up a serious fight. Check local regulations regarding size and bag limits before heading out. Local tip: target areas where smaller fish congregate, as flatheads are ambush predators.
