Flathead Catfish

If you're after a monster flathead catfish, Quinlan, Texas, and nearby Lake Tawakoni could be your destination. Tawakoni is known for holding some truly impressive flatheads. Live bait is key – think perch, goldfish, or even small sunfish. Target deep holes, submerged timber, and areas near the river channel. Summer nights are generally the best time to fish, as flatheads are nocturnal predators. The months around the spawn (late spring/early summer) can also be productive. A good starting point is the Sabine River channel that runs through the lake. Be prepared for a long wait, but the reward can be a fish of a lifetime. Lake Tawakoni flatheads are known for their size and power, so use heavy tackle and be patient. A local trick is to use a slip bobber rig to keep your bait suspended just off the bottom, away from the snags.
