Flounder

While Sackets Harbor might be better known for its freshwater fishing, don't overlook the potential for flounder in the brackish waters where Lake Ontario meets the St. Lawrence River. These fish move into shallower areas seeking warmer temperatures and abundant forage, particularly during the spring and early summer months. Look for them near the mouths of creeks and rivers that feed into the lake, where the salinity is slightly elevated. Focus on areas with muddy or sandy bottoms. A productive approach is to use natural baits like sandworms or small pieces of clam on a bottom rig. Adjust your depth based on water temperature; flounder tend to be more active in warmer water. One tip: access to these areas is best by boat, launching from the Sackets Harbor Town Dock. Be mindful of the current, as it can be surprisingly strong in the narrows.
