Tautog

While not a traditional stronghold, Tautog, also known as Blackfish, can occasionally be found in the deeper, rockier sections of Lake Ontario near Sackets Harbor. Focus your efforts around breakwalls, bridge pilings, and any substantial submerged structure. These fish are notoriously picky eaters and require a precise presentation. The key is to use heavy jigs tipped with crab or clam and to maintain constant contact with the bottom. The best time to target Tautog is during the late fall when they are feeding heavily before winter. Be prepared for a tough fight, as these fish are strong and tend to head straight for cover. A good starting point is the breakwall near the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, but be cautious of boat traffic and changing weather conditions.
