Giant Trevally (Ulua)

Giant Trevally, or Ulua as they're known locally, are a prized catch around Hilo. These powerful predators patrol the rocky shorelines, harbors, and nearshore reefs. While Ulua can be caught year-round, the larger fish tend to be more active during the summer months when water temperatures are warmer. For the best chance at landing a trophy, focus your efforts around the breakwaters and rocky points near Hilo Bay. Live bait, such as 'oama' (juvenile goatfish) or small crabs, are highly effective. Alternatively, casting large poppers or stickbaits can trigger explosive strikes. Be mindful of the sharp lava rocks along the shoreline; sturdy footwear and careful footing are essential. A local secret: try fishing the incoming tide, as this often brings in baitfish and stirs up the Ulua. The Giant Trevally in Hilo are notorious for their strength and speed, so be prepared for a serious battle.
