Chasing Ulua (Giant Trevally) around Kihei is a test of skill and patience, but the reward is well worth the effort. These brutes patrol the shallow reefs and rocky shorelines, especially where baitfish congregate. The best time to target them is during the summer months when the water warms up and the bait schools are thickest. Focus your efforts around tide changes, as this is when Ulua are most active. For land-based anglers, try the rocky points south of Kihei, casting live bait or large poppers. If you're fishing from a boat, pay attention to water clarity; Ulua are sight feeders and prefer clean water. A local tip: early mornings and late evenings offer the best opportunities, as the Ulua are less wary in low light conditions.
