Northern Pike

Pike enthusiasts around Chicago Ridge may find some success targeting Northern Pike in the local waterways. While not a renowned pike hotspot, certain lakes and forest preserve waters in Cook County can hold these toothy predators. Look for weedy areas and submerged timber, as pike often ambush prey from these locations. Spring, right after ice-out, is a particularly good time to target them, as they move into shallower water to spawn. Fall can also be productive as they feed up before winter. A practical tip: use a steel leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have extremely sharp teeth. Large spoons, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are effective lures. The pike in these smaller waters may not be trophy-sized, but they can provide exciting action. Be sure to consult local fishing regulations for specific lakes, as some may have size or catch restrictions. Access to many of these waters is available through the Cook County Forest Preserve system.
