Northern Pike

While not a renowned pike destination, Stone Park offers some opportunities to tangle with Northern Pike, primarily within the Des Plaines River system. Spring, immediately after ice-out, is arguably the best time to target these ambush predators as they move into shallower water to spawn and feed aggressively. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are your best bet for covering water quickly and triggering strikes. Don't be afraid to experiment with different retrieves and colors. A key access point is the Forest Preserve District of Cook County's Schiller Woods, which provides shoreline access to the Des Plaines River. Be mindful of the river's current, which can be strong at times, especially after heavy rains. Also, be prepared for the possibility of catching other species, as the Des Plaines is a diverse fishery. Pike in this area tend to be on the smaller side, but the occasional larger fish does show up.
