Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike around Tinley Park requires a bit of exploration, but the rewards can be significant. While not abundant, pike can be found in some of the larger lakes and sloughs associated with the area's waterways. Explore the deeper sections of the Cal-Sag Channel and larger retention ponds. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools again, are the prime times. Pike are ambush predators, so focus on areas with plenty of cover, such as weed beds, submerged timber, and drop-offs. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. A practical tip: use a wire leader to prevent pike from biting through your line. While most pike in the area are in the 2-5 pound range, larger specimens are occasionally caught. Be prepared for an aggressive strike and a spirited fight! Always handle pike with care, as they have sharp teeth and can inflict a nasty bite.
