Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike near Winnetka, Illinois, the Skokie Lagoons are worth exploring. These interconnected lagoons offer a surprisingly good habitat for Pike, with plenty of weed cover and forage. Spring (post-spawn) and fall are the most productive times. Early morning and late afternoon are often the best times to fish. Large spinners, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. Don't be afraid to experiment with brightly colored lures, as the water can sometimes be stained. A steel leader is a must, as Pike have sharp teeth. Access is readily available from numerous points along Forestway Drive. Be prepared for some weed cover; a weedless presentation can be key. While you might not find monster Pike here, there are definitely some respectable fish to be caught. Focus on areas with dense vegetation or near submerged logs. The lagoons are relatively shallow, so be mindful of your lure presentation.
