Northern Pike

While not as widely known for Pike as some other areas in Iowa, the ponds, creeks, and connected waterways around Clemons can occasionally hold Northern Pike, particularly in areas with dense vegetation. These fish often move into smaller bodies of water during the spring spawning season. Look for weedy backwaters, shallow bays, and areas where creeks enter larger ponds. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall are the best times to target them. A local tip: try fishing with large spoons or spinnerbaits retrieved quickly through the weeds. Be prepared for some thick cover, as these pike like to hide in heavy vegetation. Access can be limited in some areas, so scouting ahead and obtaining permission from landowners may be necessary. While not guaranteed, the chance of landing a surprise pike near Clemons can add some excitement to your fishing trip.
