Northern Pike

If you're targeting Northern Pike near Almont, Michigan, the Clinton River and some of the larger connected lakes and ponds offer opportunities. While not known for monster pike, the area holds a healthy population of smaller to mid-sized fish that provide exciting action. Spring, right after ice-out, and fall, when water temperatures begin to drop, are the most productive times to target pike in this region. They move into shallower weedy areas to spawn in spring and feed heavily in the fall. Local tip: Focus on areas with submerged vegetation and fallen timber, as these provide ambush points for pike. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. Also, consider using a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. Check local regulations regarding size and possession limits. Access to the Clinton River is available in some locations through the Clinton River Greenway. The pike in this area generally aren’t as pressured as in larger, more popular fisheries, so a well-presented lure often gets results.
