Northern Pike
Sundance, Wyoming, might not be the first place that springs to mind for trophy Northern Pike, but Keyhole Reservoir, a short drive north, offers a surprisingly good opportunity. This reservoir, formed by the Belle Fourche River, holds a healthy population of pike that thrive in its weedy bays and submerged timber. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time as pike move into the shallows to spawn. Focus on areas with emerging vegetation. Fall, as water temperatures cool, can also produce explosive action as pike aggressively feed before winter. A local tip: trolling large, flashy spoons or crankbaits along weed lines is a proven tactic. Be aware that Keyhole can experience strong winds, so check the forecast before heading out. The reservoir also has several boat ramps, including Pine Haven and Keyhole State Park, providing easy access to different sections of the lake. The pike here tend to average in the 3-5 pound range, but larger fish are definitely present, making it a worthwhile destination for pike anglers seeking a unique Wyoming experience.
