While perhaps not the first species that comes to mind in northeast Wyoming, channel catfish offer a fun and accessible fishing opportunity near Sundance. Keyhole Reservoir, east of town, is a reliable spot for targeting catfish. The best time to target these whiskered predators is during the warmer months, from late spring through summer. Fish the late evening and nighttime hours, as catfish are most active then. Look for them in deeper holes, near submerged timber, and along rocky shorelines. Chicken liver, nightcrawlers, and commercially prepared catfish baits are all effective. A good access point is the marina area, but be prepared for some walking to reach prime fishing spots. The catfish in Keyhole Reservoir aren't known for their massive size, but you can consistently find fish in the 2-5 pound range, providing excellent table fare.
