Spotted Bass

While largemouth bass get most of the attention, Gumbranch also holds populations of spotted bass in its creeks and rivers. These feisty fish tend to prefer slightly deeper, clearer water than largemouth, and are often found around rocky areas and creek channels. The Ogeechee River system is your best bet for finding them. Spring and fall are the best times to target spotted bass. They can be caught using similar techniques as largemouth, but downsizing your lures and line can often be beneficial. Try using smaller crankbaits, jigs, or finesse worms. Because they favor moving water, focus on areas with current. Access can be limited in some areas, so research public access points or boat ramps beforehand. Spotted bass in this area typically range from 1-3 pounds, and are known for their aggressive strikes and spirited fights. Remember to check local regulations, as spotted bass are sometimes managed differently than largemouth.
