Spotted Bass

While largemouth get most of the attention near Jacksonville, don't overlook the spotted bass. The Altamaha River system holds a healthy population of these feisty fighters. Spotted bass tend to prefer slightly deeper, clearer water than largemouth, so focus your efforts around rocky points, submerged timber, and creek channels. They are often found near current breaks. Spring and fall are the best times to target them, although they can be caught year-round. Smaller crankbaits, jigs, and Carolina-rigged worms are effective lures. A local trick is to fish around bridge pilings, as spotted bass often congregate there. Access to the Altamaha is available via several public boat ramps, but a smaller boat or kayak can be advantageous for navigating some of the narrower creeks and backwaters. Spotted bass in the Altamaha are known for their tenacity and willingness to strike artificial lures, making them a fun and rewarding target.
