Striped Bass

While not as widely known as some other locations, Richton offers a unique opportunity to target striped bass in the Leaf River. These landlocked stripers have been stocked in the past, and a population persists, providing a challenging but rewarding fishing experience. The best time to target them is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, when they move upstream in search of cooler water and spawning grounds. Look for them in deeper holes and near structure, such as fallen trees and rock piles. Large swimbaits and crankbaits that imitate shad are effective lures. Some anglers also have success trolling these lures in the deeper sections of the river. Access to the river is available at the Highway 15 bridge. Remember that striped bass can be line-shy, so using fluorocarbon leaders is recommended. Be prepared for a fight; these fish can be powerful.
