Tautog

Tautog, also known as blackfish, are a prized catch for anglers fishing out of Blue Point. These hard-fighting fish inhabit rocky structures, wrecks, and pilings in the Great South Bay and surrounding waters. Fall and late spring are the ideal times to target them, as they move inshore to spawn and feed. For success, use heavy tackle and target areas with strong currents. Green crabs are the bait of choice, fished on a jig or bottom rig. Be prepared to lose some tackle, as tautog are masters at diving into structure. A local tip: explore the pilings around the Robert Moses Causeway and the Fire Island Inlet. Tautog in this area are known for being particularly stubborn and require patience and persistence. Always check the current regulations for size and bag limits before fishing.
