Targeting Tautog near Henderson Harbor requires understanding the unique structure and forage base of eastern Lake Ontario. While not a classic saltwater tautog location, these fish have adapted to the brackish conditions and can be found around rocky structures, submerged timber, and artificial reefs. Prime time is late spring and early fall when water temperatures are moderate. Look for areas with good current flow, as this brings in the crustaceans and other invertebrates that tautog feed on. A key to success here is using natural presentations, like green crabs or small pieces of shrimp, fished on a jig head right on the bottom. Pay close attention to your depth finder, as tautog tend to congregate in specific spots. Access to these areas is best by boat, with several marinas and launch ramps available in Henderson Harbor. Be aware that the water can be choppy, especially with a north wind.
