Tautog

Tautog, or blackfish, are a prized catch for anglers fishing around Point Lookout. These hard-fighting fish are known for their wily nature and delicious flavor. The key to success is targeting structure like rocky bottoms, wrecks, and bridges in the bays and nearshore waters. The tog season typically runs from October through December and then reopens in the spring. They are true bottom dwellers so use a sturdy rod and reel with heavy jigs or bottom rigs baited with green crabs, Asian crabs, or clams. A slow, deliberate presentation is essential. Fish the slack tides or periods of weaker current for best results. Accessing prime tog spots often requires a boat, but some shore fishing opportunities exist around the inlets and jetties. Be prepared for some serious battles – these fish are surprisingly strong. The tog population in the area is carefully managed, so always check the current regulations regarding size and bag limits.
