Tautog

If you're targeting Tautog, or Blackfish, around Staten Island, think structure. These fish are masters of camouflage and thrive around pilings, rocks, and submerged debris in the waters surrounding the island, including the Arthur Kill and Raritan Bay. The best time to target Tautog is during the fall and early winter months when they move inshore to spawn. Green crabs are the go-to bait, fished on a sturdy bottom rig capable of withstanding the strong currents. Pay close attention to your line, as Tautog are notorious for subtle bites. Public access points along the shoreline and piers offer decent opportunities, but a boat will greatly expand your range and access to prime Tautog habitat. Tautog fishing requires patience and persistence, but the reward of landing one of these hard-fighting fish is well worth the effort.
