Tautog

Tautog, also known as Blackfish, offer a challenging and rewarding fishing experience near Three Mile Bay, though they are not as prevalent as other species. Targeting these fish requires navigating the complex underwater structures along the Eastern Lake Ontario shoreline. Look for rocky outcroppings, submerged pilings, and other areas where Tautog can find shelter and food. The best time to target them is during the fall and early winter, as they move inshore to feed before the water gets too cold. Use heavy tackle and strong hooks, as Tautog are powerful fighters and often hold tight to structure. Green crabs are the bait of choice. Fish tight to the bottom, and be prepared for quick strikes. Accessing these rocky areas often requires a boat; consider launching from a nearby marina and using your electronics to locate promising structure. Be aware of the often-challenging weather conditions in the fall and winter and always check local fishing regulations.
