Tautog

Tautog, also known as blackfish, are a prized catch around Westhampton Beach. These bottom-dwelling fish are masters of camouflage and inhabit rocky areas, wrecks, and pilings. Fall is prime time for targeting tautog, as they move inshore to feed before the water temperatures drop significantly. Look for them around Shinnecock Inlet and the surrounding rocky structures. When fishing for tautog, use heavy tackle and strong hooks, as they are powerful fighters and have a knack for breaking lines. Green crabs are the bait of choice for many local anglers. A helpful tip is to use a rig that keeps your bait close to the bottom, as tautog are rarely found far from structure. Be prepared for a challenge, as tautog are notoriously finicky and require patience and precision to hook successfully.
