Walleye fishing near Newfield, New Jersey, presents a unique challenge and opportunity. While not as renowned as other walleye hotspots, the artificial impoundments and deeper pools of the Maurice River watershed can hold some surprises. Union Lake, in particular, is stocked with walleye periodically and offers the best chance for success. Focus your efforts during the spring and fall months when water temperatures are cooler. Walleye are light-sensitive, so low-light conditions at dawn and dusk are prime times. Trolling crankbaits or jigging along the deeper drop-offs and structure is a common tactic. A fish finder can be invaluable for locating submerged timber and other walleye hideouts. Access to Union Lake is available via the public boat ramp. Keep in mind that walleye fishing in South Jersey requires persistence, but the reward of landing one of these prized fish is well worth the effort. Local anglers often use nightcrawlers or minnows on a jighead.
