White Bass

Mansfield, Arkansas, might not be the first place that comes to mind for White Bass, but the Poteau River offers a surprisingly good opportunity, especially during their spring spawning run. These feisty fish migrate upstream, congregating below dams and in areas with faster currents. The peak season is typically March and April, depending on water temperatures. Look for them around bridge pilings and rocky shoals. Small jigs, spinners, and crankbaits are highly effective. Be prepared for some fast action when you find them! Access to the Poteau River is available at several points along Highway 71, but be mindful of water levels, as they can fluctuate rapidly after rainfall. Local knowledge suggests that the area just below the dam at Waldron (a short drive from Mansfield) can be a hotspot during the spawn. White bass in this region tend to run smaller than those in larger reservoirs, but what they lack in size, they make up for in aggression and numbers.
