Brown Trout

Raymond, Wisconsin, offers some surprisingly good brown trout fishing, especially if you know where to look. The Root River and its tributaries winding through the area are the key. These smaller streams, often overlooked, hold surprisingly large browns, particularly during the spring and fall spawning runs. Spring (April-May) is prime time, as the water warms and the browns become more active after the winter. Fall (late September-November) is also excellent, with spawning fish aggressively taking streamers and egg patterns. A great access point is along Highway G, where there are several spots to park and wade the Root River. Be aware that water levels can fluctuate rapidly after rain, making wading challenging. Local tip: Brown trout in this area can be quite selective, so carrying a variety of fly patterns and being prepared to switch tactics is crucial for success. Don't be afraid to try small nymphs and dry flies, even for these typically streamer-loving fish.
