Brown Trout

Waupaca, Wisconsin offers some surprisingly good brown trout fishing, especially in the Crystal River and its tributaries. What makes this area special is the relatively cool, clear water fed by springs, creating ideal conditions for browns to thrive. Spring and fall are prime times. In spring, target pre-spawn browns with streamers or spinners. Fall sees the browns returning to spawn, and egg patterns or brightly colored lures can be effective. Access to the Crystal River is generally good, with several county parks and road crossings providing entry points. Be mindful of private property and always obtain permission before fishing on private land. The browns in this area tend to run smaller, with most fish being in the 10-14 inch range, but there are some larger specimens to be found, particularly during the spawning seasons. Stealth is key in these clear waters – use long leaders and make quiet presentations to avoid spooking these wary fish.
