Tautog

Tautog, also known as blackfish, are a challenging but rewarding species to target near Grand Island. While primarily a saltwater species, they can be found in the lower Niagara River and Lake Erie's nearshore areas, particularly around rocky structures, docks, and bridge pilings. These fish are notorious for their subtle bites and preference for snag-filled habitats, so heavy tackle and strong line are essential. Green crabs are the bait of choice, but clams and other shellfish can also be effective. The best time to target tautog is during the fall when water temperatures begin to cool. A practical tip is to use a Carolina rig with a short leader to minimize snags. Access can be gained from various public fishing piers and boat launches along the Niagara River. Be prepared for a fight, as tautog are known for their powerful runs and ability to break lines.
